Discuss and analyse the stories using appropriate marketing terminology and concepts, and applying marketing frameworks, tools etc. if/where relevant. The analysis should be your own, not simply reproducing analysis contained within the news stories. The stories may be gleaned from any of a variety of quality sources e.g. broadsheet newspapers, marketing magazines or websites, business magazines etc. Copies of the relevant stories must be included as appendices in your assignment submission. The word count is 2,500 to 3,000 words. Each piece of analysis should start with a factual ‘Summary of the News Story' of no more than 150 words. This will contextualise what you are about to write. The 2 x 150 word summaries should not be included in your allowed word count. An Executive Summary of your article is not required. Important: please read the following: You should treat this assignment as, effectively, two separate pieces of analysis of approximately 1,250 to 1,500 words each (though they should be combined into one document). There is no need to compare and contrast the stories with each other. Please bear in mind the stories must be marketing based . The marketing topics discussed may be ones already covered on the module or ones that have not yet been covered. Do not simply uses a general business story e.g. a company's financial results, unless there is a clear and strong marketing angle. As each story will be marketing based it is essential that you base your analysis on appropriate marketing theory, using relevant terminology, definitions, frameworks, models etc. The stories in question must be marketing news stories i.e. some kind of event must have occurred. General comment pieces, say on a company's past strategy, do not count. Please do not rely on repeating journalists' comments, analysis or quotations. Very selective use of others' material may be appropriate but the assignment is primarily a test of your thinking. It may be helpful to find the stories in more than one source to find alternative angles. It is also often helpful to go back to the original written source of a story e.g. a press release on a brand's website. The presentation format is flexible but it must be neat and professional and carefully spell-checked. Figures and tables must be properly numbered and labelled. Full Harvard referencing must be used. You may use a single Reference List and a single set of Appendices covering the two stories. The word ‘discuss' in the requirement indicates that you must look at the stories from a variety of viewpoints. How you approach the analysis is up to you but you might wish to consider the background and context for it, actual or possible motivations for whatever has happened, its impact(s), suggested stakeholder reactions, wider implications and so on. This discussion should be contextualised using marketing terminology, frameworks etc. You should state the total word count for the assignment on the first page. This word count should exclude the 150 word introduction for each piece, citations and the Reference List.
