GIS3002 Mathematics For Technology - Gulf College

Aim

This module introduces students to basic concepts in mathematics in a context of solving real-world problems. As such, the module will provide students with the foundation required for further development in both engineering and computer science programmes, including the basics in hardware, data and usability.

Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts required for further studies in engineering and computer science.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate an appreciation for how basic aspects of mathematics (algebraic) can be used to solve real-world problems and help with general problem-solving skills
Learning Outcome 3: Apply basic mathematical concepts to solve real world problems.

Portfolio Overview

TASK 1

Choose any 7 members of your family. You may select your brothers, sisters, cousins or anyone who belongs to your family. As their weights in kilograms and heights in meters.

a) Find BMI (Body Mass Index) of each of them. You may use the following formula:

BMI = m/h2

Once you finish calculating BMI for each of them, fill the following table:

Sn.

Members

BMI values

1

[Name of the first member]

TASK 2

As we know that the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Find out a suitable time from morning till 11:00 AM and stand under the Sun. The Sun will cast a shadow of yours on the earth. Calculate the size of your shadow (from the end of the toe till the head of the shadow) in centimetres.

a) Calculate the angle of depression from the top of your head till the top of the head of your shadow.

b) Select any suitable time from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM and repeat the same process to calculate the angle of depression from the top of your head to the top of the head of your shadow.

c) Select any suitable time from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM and repeat the same process to calculate the angle of depression from the top of your head to the top of the head of your shadow.

d) Select any suitable time from 04:00 PM to 05:00 PM and repeat the same process to calculate the angle of depression from the top of your head to the top of the head of your shadow.

e) Draw the graph of angles calculated in part b), c) and d)

f) Analyse the graph carefully and suggest a suitable time when the angle of depression approximately be the same as you calculated in a)
