Assessment Task 1: Group Presentation - Leadership Scenario

1. Assessment details:

E?ective leadership is central to leading and managing a health services organisation at all levels.
As re?ection is increasingly being recognised as an important tool to "cultivate on-the-job learning" (Seibert 1999, p.201), the aim of this assignment is for students to re?ect on their work environment to demonstrate their understanding of leadership theories and principles, as well how they can provide the framework for improvement and/or strengthening of current/future leadership behaviour.
The presentation will illustrate a workplace leadership situation or critical incident in which leadership in the health services workplace was e?ective OR ine?ective. Students will analyse the scenario in relation to selected leadership theories and principles and make appropriate recommendations.

Students will form groups of 3-4 students. Each group will choose one of the group member's critical incident to illustrate and demonstrate the principles of leadership. Each presentation will include an annotated bibliography of three or four (dependent on group size) research articles relevant to the scenario presented.

Presentations must include the following:

a) Illustration of a contextual workplace leadership situation or critical incident that you were either involved in, were witness to, or e?ected by, and that in your opinion the leadership was particularly e?ective or ine?ective. A clear statement as to whether the leadership illustrated was e?ective or ine?ective must be provided and supported by referring to the leadership theories.
b) Statements of speci?c principles and/or literature that support the claim for ine?ectiveness, or e?ectiveness of the leadership situation. In addition to contextual relevant principles identi?ed by the group, at least three of the following must be referred to:
- Personal traits/behaviours/styles of the leader - Organisational context/culture

- Followership and/or group dynamics - Power

- Ethics/Values - Diversity/Gender

c) Recommendations for the maintenance or improvement of future leadership behaviours.

d) An oral presentation of the annotated bibliography, including a statement regarding the contextual relevance (or irrelevance) of the reading to the leadership situation outlined in the presentation.
Note: Each group member will receive the same grade for this assessment. It is expected that all students contribute to the development of the assignment and the oral presentation of the annotated bibliography.

Assessment Task 2a: Major Essay - Leadership Context - 2500 words

1. Assessment Details:

Consider the role and behaviour of the leader in the work scenarios listed below. Choose four of these scenarios and write approximately 600 words on each on how leadership might be exercised. Include the contextual, cultural and people factors that are relevant to the leadership approach.
You are required to draw on the theory from this course as well as other material to support your discussion.
This is an academic essay and requires the appropriate format and references.

Leadership context:

a. Orientation of 4 new junior sta? members to the Unit.
b. Spike in infection rates in post-surgical cases.
c. Building a high functioning team in preparation for a project.
d. Setting up a new community health clinic for refugees.
e. Introducing a new patient monitoring system on the ward.
f. Program to encourage vaccination/immunisation uptake.
g. Dealing with inappropriate behaviour between a sta? member and patient.
h. Preparing for a restructure of the Unit.

*Assessment Task 2b: Major Essay - Leadership Re?ection - 2500 words

1. Assessment Details:

Discuss your major observations about leadership studied during the semester. This exercise should be written in the ?rst person (i.e I did, I learned, I will). Although you need to write in the ?rst person, this is an academic essay and should be referenced in the normal manner.

In your re?ection, respond to the following;

a. Review your responses to the leadership activity and your de?nition from Topic 1 and discuss how your ideas have changed or been reinforced over the semester. What is your de?nition of leadership now?
b. What have you learned about leadership through this subject that is of bene?t to you and/or your organisation?
c. What more do you need to learn or do?
d. How will you develop your own leadership knowledge and skills?
e. Where are your developmental opportunities?
f. What implications do your studies of leadership have for you in the future?
