Thriving in a Competitive Global Context

Learning outcome 1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the changing nature of the global business environment, buyer behaviour in a global context and the factors which influence the implementation of an organisation's competitive business strategy in a globalcontext.

Choose the Banking Industry

Task:

The first assessment is a written report and accounts for 30% of the overall grade for the Unit. The length of the report is 2000 words. The report will be based either on a short case study or a scenario / question (s) related to topics covered during the earlier part of the semester. The particular focus will be on assessing your analysis and evaluation of the competitive global business environment. The written report will also contain a reflective element where you will need to reflect on your learning to date and also reflect upon the issues which will be outlined in your task. The reflective element will carry a 50% weighting.

First you must choose a Global industry (make sure you will be able to have access to data. You well have to answer the following question:

What are the risks linked to your industry and how can a firm mitigate them?

In the first part of your assignment, you will need to reflect on the different methodologies available to identify both current and potential future risks and then discuss the risks you have identified. Make sure you identify risks that are specific to your industry and not too generic.In the second part of the assignment, you need to reflect on how what you have learned during the unit can help you mitigateboth current and future risks. You will then need to present a plan of actions to implement mitigating actions.

In order to pass Assessment 1 you will need to: Suggest this belongs in the section below
• Undertake a critical analysis in response to the relevant issues highlighted in the written report, and include
a supporting reflective report.
• Apply relevant theoretical frameworks and industry examples in response to the written task to support understanding and arguments.

We will be filling this section in together during class make sure you have downloaded/printed out the Assignment Brief and bring it to the session with you.

• Deliver a report that includes a detailed analysis that identifies the primary strategic risks facing an international business in your chosen industry.
• Analysis requires you to identify appropriate risk responses.
• Develop and support your analysis by ideas and techniques drawn from academic theory and up to date research.
• Ensure your arguments are backed up by evidence.

Introduction Short (Approximately 200 words) introduction to the report setting out what the aims and objectives of the report are, what the report will cover and why.

Identification of the risk You should use third party sources (e.g. academic literature) and secondary data to reflect on the concepts underpinning risk analysis (around 300 words included in the overall 725 words). You should refer to any relevant models, and frameworks to develop critical viewpoints to identify the current and potential future risk. Do not describe the tools or frameworks but use them to back up your analysis.
(Approximately 725 words).

Mitigation of the risk Using third party sources (e.g. academic literature) and secondary data to reflect the concepts underpinningrisk mitigation (around 300 words included in the 725 words). You should refer to any relevant models, and frameworks to derive critical viewpoints to assess the distinctiveness of the firm. Do not describe the tools or frameworks but use them to back up your analysis.
(Approximately 725 words).

Conclusions This section should initially answer the report aim and objectives and draw together the main points from your analysis of literature. It summarises what has been learned from undertaking this research it should clearly summarise the findings derived from the external and internal analysis provided in the report. (Approximately 200 words).
