Question: The client interview helps social workers obtain necessary information for client planning and goal setting and provides a primary means for collecting information during the assessment phase. Interviewing calls for multiple techniques, with each technique assessing the client's verbal and nonverbal communication. Nonverbal cues can include the client's tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. It is critically important that you practice the use of meaningful verbal and nonverbal responses to encourage the client's engagement in the interview. You must also be aware of cultural diversity inherent in nonverbal messages. When verbal and nonverbal responses are underemphasized, the engagement and assessment stages can have a negative impact on clients, such as client perception of social worker apathy. In this Discussion, you apply verbal and nonverbal elements in a social work setting.
