A bright and promising university student - Latoya - was gang-raped one summer evening on her way from classes. It is believed that the attack was orchestrated by persons who thought that she was too 'virtuous and Christian' in her deportment and they wanted to 'teach her a lesson.' The family of this girl is quite prominent and they did not want publicity so they kept the matter private hoping that the young woman would not be pregnant. However, when she missed her period the following month their worse fear was realized - she was pregnant.
During the same week of the discovery of her pregnancy, the family received a letter from a prestigious university confirming that the scholarship for which Latoya had applied to pursue studies in internal medicine was approved and she should begin classes that Fall. The family is thrown into and ethical conflict.
Latoya's parents are forced to reveal the matter to their pastor and some other relatives as they seek advice on the path forward. Her parents as well as herself are strong opponents of abortion but her relatives try to persuade her to do the abortion so that she can accept the scholarship and get on with her desired career. They tell her that according to a clause in contract if she does not pick up the scholarship for the upcoming school year, she would have forfeited a grand opportunity. They also try to convince her that God would not hold her guilty for removing from her womb something that she did not consent to be there.
Required: Apply utilitarian and Kantian Ethics to the scenario and advice Latoya and her parents of the best alternative to resolving this crisis.
