The Case
Women in Oman today pursue careers and further their professional training, moving from their traditional role at home to public servants. In 1996, Article 17 of the Basic Law of Oman states that all citizens are equal and bans gender-based discrimination. In 2002, universal suffrage was granted to all Omanis over the age of 21. A Royal Decree in 2008 gave women equal right to own land as held by their male counterparts. However, according to Human Rights Watch World Report (2019), in practice, women continue to face discrimination. The Personal Status Law discriminates against women on matters such as divorce, inheritance, child custody, and legal guardianship. For instance, women can lose child custody if they re-marry, and men continue to hold guardianship of the child, regardless of whether they have custody. These are only few among those discrimination that women are still facing.
