Critical Thinking In Organisations

Learning outcome 1: Develop a profile of personal thinking style and the styles of others while enhancing interpersonal and communication skills.

Learning outcome 2: Evaluate a target problem, its structure, strengths and weaknesses of arguments and remove barriers to individual and group creativity to foster an innovative work environment.

Learning outcome 3: Apply logical methodologies to transform a range of creative options into supportable decisions and present ideas clearly and concisely for maximum stakeholder benefits.

Instruction:

Students are required to write a report to review article based on the following requirement:
i) Identify THREE (3) key areas where critical thinking plays an important role in an organisation. For specific areas, elaborate how critical thinking helps the organisation to improve its performance. Subsequently, for each specific area, summarise FOUR (4) best practices currently being used by organisations globally in enhancing their ability to engage their employee to think critically.

ii) Each student is required to review and summarize the contents of the journal and provide a written submission of not exceeding 2,000 words.

iii) It must be written concisely, in excellent business English.

iv) Evaluation criteria for this individual assignment is based on the table below:

v) Students are expected to employ secondary data and information from TAR UC library and materials from the Web. Student are required to find the necessary information from magazines, articles, journals, websites, and any other suitable resource.
vi) The word counts are from exclude references and appendices). Refer to attached Cover Page for assessment criteria. (Appendix 1)

Critical thinking in Organisations.

Analyse a real Organisation of your choice.
Your group is tasked in evaluating the following:

A) Background and current practices:

1) How aware is the organisation on the concept of critical think among its employees?
2) How much importance does the company place in enhancing the critical thinking capabilities of their employees?
3) How much effort does the organisation put in developing critical thinking capabilities?
4) How does the organisation develop critical thinking employees?
5) Does the organisation have a structured plan such as learning and development program to develop critical thinking in their employees?

B) Areas of application of critical thinking in the organisation:
1) Identify how critical thinking skills could impact the organisation.
2) Identify areas where critical thinking could be applied, identify specific areas such as decision making, problem solving, communication and so on. Seek specific examples to support their application or lack of application in critical thinking in their organisation.

C) Recommendations:
1) Based on your finding, propose THREE (3) suitable action plans based on the best practices which the organisation should adopt in developing critical thinking in the organisation.
2) Incorporate tools and models which could be adopted by the organisation to the enhance the capability of the organisation to be a more critical thinking organisation.

The targeted person to be interviewed should be the Human Resources Manager, General Manager or the CEO of the organisation.

Method:

1) Identify a company of your choice. Make an introduction of the company in your report. Highlight the presence in Malaysia, number of employees, the organisational structure, products and so on. Completion of this by week 5.

2) Develop a list of questions based on the requirements of the assignment as stated above. The question should focus and support you in gathering the required information for you to critical write your report. Completion of this by week 7.

3) Conduct the interview with the organisation. Completion of this by Week 8.
4) With your team, critical evaluate the responses you have gathered through your interview. Summarise your finding in your report accordingly. Completion of this by Week 9.
5) Propose your team's recommendation for the company based on the best practises and benchmark based on your research. Completion of this by week 10.

Evaluation.

Your report should be of sound and critical value to the organisation to which quality of your work is some that you would feel comfortable showing it to your bosses, colleagues, prospective clients or employers in order to provide an example of the high quality of research, writing, and presentation that you are capable of.

1. Introduction:
Overview of the organisation of your choice.

2. Literature Review
Your report need to provide conceptual and theoretical knowledge on the importance of critical thinking in organisations.

3. Background and current practices:
Your finding based on the interview, the solutions and actions taken in resolving those contemporary issues in organisational development and change based on the theoretical finding and in real life application.

4. Areas of application in critical thinking in organisations.
Your report should be based on the 5W2H in the application of critical think in the organisation focusing on the key application areas of your choice.

5. Recommendation:
Your report should provide a detailed action plan to enable the organisation to improve critical thinking among its employees. You should be basing this recommendation based on best practices and provide sufficient justification of your recommendation. You are required to provide THREE (3) recommendations.

6. Report writing/ Language/ Grammar:

Report must be written using excellent business-like structure, language and grammar, it must show sufficient effort to get both primary and secondary data source with has to be evidence through proper citation using Harvard standards. The thoroughness and quality of the primary and secondary is critical in developing a good report.

7. Report Utility and Usefulness:

The report shall have good utility/usefulness of the report.
A good question to ask is: "Would the client clearly see the value of this intervention strategy, and could he or she execute this particular intervention using only this paper as a resource?" A good answer is: "Yes, and Yes."

8. All members in a group will receive the same grade for the written report.
