This scene begins with the 918th bomber crew giving their debrief after returning from a particularly difficult bombing mission. Planes are damaged and the group suffered significant losses.

  • Five planes were lost on this mission. Of the five crews that did not make it back, 3 were killed, 11 wounded, the rest captured.
  • Five planes were lost, one is under repair, and they're only getting three replacements. There are 21 planes in a group. This means the 918th can only put up 18 planes on the next mission, while the other three groups (that did not have losses) can put up 21 planes each.
  • In the hope of turning things around, headquarters orders changes in their bombing strategy. Instead of flying missions at 19,000 ft at night, the new field order is daytime bombing at 9,000 ft (a much lower altitude). Their work just became much more dangerous and stressful.
  • Of the 28 men asking to be excused from tomorrow's mission - 3 times more than normal, most are reporting having "colds" when they don't actually have colds.

After receiving this new field order, Base Commander, Colonel Keith Davenport, rushes to headquarters and confronts his friend, Brigadier General Frank Savage, to voice his concerns.
