Data Management and Analytics
Assessment - Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation Presentation
Learning Outcome 1: Elaborate how to manage data within organisations, teams and projects. Investigate techniques on how to collect, store, clean and manipulate data.
Learning Outcome 2: Explore data analysis and visualisation techniques and apply when and where applicable.
Critically analyse and apply data issues in an organisational context.
Learning Outcome 3: Effectively report and communicate findings to a business audience who are not necessarily IT professionals.
Learning Outcome 4: Critically analyse and interpret data analytics, its principles and tools for organizational problem solving.
Assessment Task
In groups, apply advanced data analysis and visualisation skills, and create meaningful data visualisations for a public dataset. Then, create a 10-15-minute presentation as a short video explaining the findings of your visual analysis.
Context
In Modules 3 and 4, you learnt about Advanced Data Visualisations techniques. You have also explored different analysis methods and the usage of statistics in data analysis. This group presentation gives you the opportunity to select publicly available datasets, transform, perform analysis, use advanced visualisation techniques on the data, identify meaningful insight into what selected data has to offer.
Instructions
Step 1: Form groups of two members each. You may seek help from your learning facilitator.
Step 2: Select a publicly available dataset from the internet. Alternatively, you can use the same dataset used for A1, provided it allows you to apply the below listed advanced analytical methods.
Step 3: Find out the issues that the selected data has and apply suitable steps to handle the issues and errors if any. Also transform the data variables if needed, to make it suitable for subsequent analysis (Note: Use power query editor and DAX expressions)
Step 4: Analyse selected data using the selected tool and implement the advanced visualisation techniques. Creating meaningful visualisations that give you more visual insight into data.
Step 5: Based on analysis using visualisation, identify important finding about that data.
Step 6: Carefully identify your limitations.
Step 7: Now create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation having the following sections: Section1: Selected Dataset
Provide a link to data.
Provide a rationale for the choice of this data.
Explain how you handled data issues.
What data transformations did you do to prepare the data?
Section 2: Selected Advanced Data analytics technique/ Visual
Provide a list of objectives or investigative questions you are interested to explore in this dataset.
For each question, select an analysis method from the list below and apply on the dataset. Explain the rationale for the choice of a methods and also state how the method helped you in answering your investigative questions.
Use of power query and DAX expressions
Forecasting/Prediction, Trendlines, linear regression
Clustering techniques
Decision tree/Python in power BI
Section 3: Visualisations (Diagrams)
On every PowerPoint slide, copy a diagram / chart (visualisation created for the advanced analytics) and beneath the visual briefly explain what information/knowledge you obtained from the diagram. Make as many PowerPoint slides as you want to.
It is also expected and important that the student shows the functionality of the visualisation tool, the charts, and the dashboard, by moving to the application window of the visualisation tool in the video rather than just adding screenshots in the presentation.
Section 4: Findings and Limitations
Explain your findings about the selected data as a result of advanced data analysis and visualisation that you have performed.
Enlist your limitations.
Section 5: Group Work Distribution
Categorically explain how work was distributed between group members.
Using the PowerPoint, create a video presentation in which your facilitator should be able to see you as well as the PowerPoint slides in the video. Please note that this 10-15-minutes video is like an online presentation. Both members of the group should take part in the video equally.
