Assessment task: Written analysis of case-based scenario (Case Study Essay)

Purpose

This assessment is designed to help you develop your knowledge and ability to apply clinical reasoning with the best evidence-based nursing practice in a given nursing scenario. This assignment also allows you to demonstrate the knowledge you have learnt in your clinical units (NURBN1013 and NURBN1017), along with academic writing and referencing skills.

Task Details
In this assessment, you are required to:
• Write a Case Study Essay to address the listed key points in the Checklist, using THE CLINICAL REASONING CYCLE as a guide.
• Find and read a wide variety of scholarly sources on the topic, integrating a minimum of six (6) references.
• Reference your articles using APA 7th edition referencing style.
• Allocate approximately 25 hours to researching and completing this task.

Step 1: Task Understanding
• Read the Instructions and Checklist carefully.
• Read the Guide: Rubrics (in Cadmus Manual) and then your Marking Rubric.
• Understand the format and structure of the Case Study Essay.
• Review the Case Scenario.
o Identify the patient's symptoms, medical history, and examination findings.

Step 2: Research
Research the patient's condition, including current treatment options and guidelines.
• Read the Library Search Tips guide in Cadmus Manual.
• Gather relevant sources and materials to support your Case Study Essay, including reputable medical journals, textbooks, and guidelines.
o Find and read a wide variety of scholarly sources on the topic, integrating a minimum of six (6) references.
» These should be no more than seven (7) years old unless of historical significance and/or of specific relevance to the topic.
• Evaluate the credibility and reliability of the sources you gather, considering the author's expertise, the publication, and the publication date.
• Take detailed notes on key points made by the authors of the sources you gather, including main arguments, key concepts, and evidence presented.
o Take note of any recent updates or advancements in the field related to the patient's condition as outlined in the case scenario.
o Include citations and references in your notes.
• Analyse the sources you have gathered, looking for patterns, themes and perspectives that will help you to develop your analysis.

Step 3: Plan Case Study Essay
Using the CLINICAL REASONING CYCLE as a guide, plan your Case Study Essay, addressing the following points:
• Please note that the entire Clinical Reasoning Cycle is not required, just the points outlined below. You may include headings as outlined.
• Introduction (approximately 150 words)
o Briefly detail what you are going to write about, briefly introducing relevant information from the patient scenario and introduce the clinical reasoning cycle (CRC).
• Collect Cues (approximately 600 words)
o What additional information must you gather to guide the care for this patient? For example:
» what current information is of interest (review),
» what significant signs and symptoms do you notice about this patient's clinical presentation (review and recall)
» what other information or assessments might provide useful information (gather)?
o Provide a rationale and evidence to support your ideas.
• Process (approximately 400 words)
o Based on the cues and information gathered, analyse the facts and draw inferences/hypothesise the cause of this patient's presentation. You must use evidence to support this.
o The following steps may help you with your analysis for processing the information.
» Interpret - are these cues normal?
» Discriminate - Narrow down the most important information
» Relate - cluster cues to make sense of them by looking for relationships or patterns
» Infer - think about the cues and make inferences based on the analysis and interpretation of cues
• Identify Problems/Issues (approximately 300 words)
o Identify and discuss the two (2) most pertinent health issues or problems for this patient.
o Provide a rationale as to why these are the most pertinent health issues and use evidence to support your ideas.
• Establish Goals (approximately 200 words)
o Identify and discuss one (1) goal for each of the pertinent health issues identified for this patient.
o The goals must include a clear desired outcome and timeframe. It is recommended that you follow the SMART goal framework for these.
o Provide a rationale to explain how the goal is relevant and use evidence to support your ideas.
• Conclusion (approximately 150 words)
o Summarise the key considerations and management strategies discussed.
o Do not introduce new content or ideas.
• Reference List: Provide a list of all sources cited in your Case Study Essay.
o Reference your articles using APA 7th edition referencing style.

Step 4: Write Essay
• Building on your plan, write your Case Study Essay. Things to remember:
o Ensure that the essay is written in a clear and concise manner.
o Use appropriate medical terminology.
o Use appropriate referencing and citations.
o Follow the formatting and structure guidelines provided.
