Learning Outcome 1: Apply analysis techniques in vehicle design, primarily for the modelling of vehicle frame and body structures by finite element analysis

Learning Outcome 2: use commercial software packages to model automotive components and structures.

Assignment Tasks:

In this assignment, you will deliver a report to consider the following design aspects when working on a draft FE model of chassis design given in the bottom of this page:

1. Present at least six different FE models and modelling results, based upon the following two criteria respectively (you need to provide three models to satisfy each criterion):

a) reduce the weight without decreasing the original torsional stiffness (each reduction of weight must not be less than 0.8 kg)

b) try to increase the torsional stiffness of the chassis without increasing the weight of the original model

2. Compare and discuss all of your models with the original FE model in terms of stiffness, weight and reality

3. Recommend your model for the optimized chassis with the highest torsional stiffness and lowest weight

4. Conclusions.
