PCPH 5014 Applied care of the critically ill adult

1. Assessment of learning in Practice is by the completion of a Module Practice Assessment Document (PAD). Each of the Module Learning Outcomes requires you to submit evidence of achievement. These are explained within the PAD.
2. Assessment of Academic learning is through a marked 4000-word assignment exploring contemporary issues within critical care and will allow the student to demonstrate the ability to critically analyse and synthesise theoretical knowledge and concepts gained during this module.
• There must be no way of identifying patients/clients or their family or the staff and placement (hospital, ward number or name) associated with the assignment.
• A pseudonym should be used for patient/client e.g. a first name.
• Acknowledge the NMC confidentiality clause. This is especially important for the assignment and presentation of this module; it is recommended that you state you have protected confidentiality within your assignment and in all portfolio evidence submitted for this module.
Presentation
All written work is to be word processed. The font used must be either Ariel, Times New Roman or Comic Sans size 12. An A4 sheet of paper can fit approximately 580 words using such defaults with Arial size 12, 510 words using such defaults with Comic Sans size 12 and 640 words using Times New Roman size 12.
i. The margins, headers and the footers should comply with the following Microsoft® Word defaults:
• Top margin = 2.54cm
• bottom margin = 2.54cm
• left margin = 3.17cm
• right margin = 3.17cm
• 1 ½ line spacing
ii. The use of such defaults allows approximately 600 words per A4 sheet. This approximation will be used to initially estimate whether an essay has potentially breeched any set word limit.
iii. The word limit for essays WILL apply to abstracts and the introduction, main body, the text in tables, conclusion and references within the essay, but WILL NOT apply to footnotes, endnotes, diagrams, appendices, reference section and bibliography.
iv. Students must clearly state the number of words in their essay on the title page.
The aim of the assessment is to help students develop evidence-based knowledge, skill, attitudes and competence in relation to critical care practice.
Students will be required to demonstrate their ability to critically evaluate clinical practice and present a well-structured argument for the management of their chosen critical care condition and relevant contemporary issues risen supported by appropriate evidence within the constraints of the word limit.
• A 4,000-word assignment which focuses on a critical care condition
• An appendix may be used to describe the clinical context (if patient involved) with the main body of the work focusing on critically analysing the management aspects of chosen condition and subsequent management of issues and questions risen
• You will be expected to critically explore significant advanced pathophysiology relevant to selected condition
• You will be expected to critically examine, evaluate and reflect on the management and the consequent issues and questions using contemporary evidence
• Critically evaluate and demonstrate legal, ethical and professional issues applicable to chosen topic
• Identify and critically evaluate the appropriateness and adequacy of how the best outcomes can be achieved, evaluate clinical decisions, and explore aspect of management in relation to current literature
Select a critical care condition/ issue, provide rational for and demonstrate the relevance of chosen aspect of management
and subsequent issues in practice
Critically explore relevant advanced pathophysiology related to chosen condition
Critically synthetize and evaluate the evidence, theories and concepts underpinning the aspect of the management and
consequent contemporary issues in practice
Critically reflect on the care/issues explained using contemporary evidence
Formulate a realistic revision timetable, one that you are going to adhere to. Plan for this on a weekly basis, taking into account the commitments that you have. Also consider the best time for you to focus your revision and when you can work best.
