CRM 3541 Application of Criminological and Victimological Theories In Crime Analysis - University of Venda

Problem 1: Karl Marx defined the bourgeoisie as wealthy capitalists who owned the factories of his day. The proletariat were the workers. It was the struggle between these two classes of people that led to social change and, others would later say, to crime. Is the concept of social class still relevant to criminology today? Does Marxist perspective hold any significance for contemporary South African society? Why or why not?

Problem 2: Theories of social structure seem to imply that economic conditions and the location of a person within society can create the conditions that propel people into crime. How might economic deprivation lead to crime? Is it inevitable that someone living an economically disadvantaged life will return to crime? How do physical environments such as city life and urban environment contribute to crime? Adopt a relevant theory when providing an answer.
