Assessment - Literature Review

Learning outcome 1: Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in the application of computational techniques to the modelling of structural and functional aspects of biological systems. Such an understanding will cover both Molecular and Systems levels of modelling.

Literature Review titles

1. Can Systems methods model integration of cell signalling pathways on a genome-wide scale?

Toward Genome-Scale Signalling-Network Reconstructions
Hyduke and Pallson. Nature Reviews, Genetics, 11, 297-307 (2010)

2. Whole genone Sequence comparison: Microarrays or alignment.

Comparing whole genomes using DNA microarrays
Gresham et al. Nature Reviews, Genetics, 9, 291-302 (2008)

You are required to prepare a literature review on one selected topic in Computational Biology

Carry out a literature review on a chosen topic, which will be set as a question
Provide a critical analysis of the different case studies or evidence strands relating to the subject under review
Construct a cohesive argument which answers the set question

You are required to prepare a literature review on one selected topic in Computational Biology.

You will be presented with a general research question, which you should try to address over a number of short ‘chapters'. A leading paper will be provided in each case. The structure of the work should include an introductory chapter that provides a context for the work. This should be followed be several (probably two or three) self-contained chapters which each discuss different strands/views on the topic. These strands should be brought together in a final discussion chapter that should use the evidence of the previous chapters to reach a conclusion about the posed question. Peer reviewed review articles may be used as a basis to guide you to appropriate articles and as sources that summarise key findings.

Each topic requires up-to-date articles to be reviewed, in addition to older articles that reported key findings in the selected area.

Word limit
The literature review should not exceed 2000 words Excessive word counts will negatively affect grading.
