Further Guidance
This case study aims to familiarise you with a ‘real-life' coaching situation and allow you to independently analyse and evaluate coaching tools, models, theories and techniques as discussed on the Coaching Psychology C91CP course. As a coach-in-training, we would like to prepare you for making decision as a coach and by writing this case study report you are starting to develop these
skills.
Ensure you read through the case study carefully, more than once, to ensure you are familiar with it.
Skim read the first time
Read again and start to add/make notes
Re-visit and re-read to pinpoint aspects of the case to refer to in your report
You are advised to write your report in third person tense, however first person can also be considered (see points below). This is an academic report so please do use formal academic writing avoiding slang, colloquial language and contradictions (e.g., don't, can't).
In third-person writing, the writer, or narrator, exists outside of the events in the story and individuals are referred to by their names or ‘they/them'.
In first-person writing, the writer, or narrator, writes using ‘I' to tell the story from their own point of view.
The structure of your 1500 word report is ultimately up to you however, some guidance on how to consider organising this is below:
Introduction - Briefly cover the first bullet point in the instructions and to concisely provide an overview of your analysis of the coaching situation (including coachee's goals and challenges). Integrate understanding from the course so far as you analyse.
Main Body - Here you can include your evaluation of the coaching methods used so far as well as any ethical dilemmas identified in the case (i.e., the second and third bullet points in the instructions). Use the coaching theories and models, and associated literature, that you have learnt about so far on the course to evaluate.
Recommendations and Conclusion - Focus on the fourth bullet point in the report instructions here i.e., to provide recommendations for the coach to address the coaching situation effectively. What would you do here if you were the coach? Support your recommendations with literature and research from the field of Coaching Psychology.
This is not a mandatory approach to structuring your report. However you structure your work, ensure that each section has a specific purpose and contributes to the overall flow of the report.
Sub-headings are useful to break up your report; again, there is no one way to do this. You may wish to use introduction, main body and recommendations/conclusion as above, or you can create your own (still around these sections).
Please ensure that you are embedding and drawing on key research and theory from the field of Coaching Psychology throughout your report to support your analysis and evaluation of the case study. Critical analysis is expected in your work at postgraduate level where
literature is used to critique existing models and theories in their application, yet also consider their benefits in the correct applications.
You will need to produce a final reference list (excluded from the word count) at the end of your document, and ensure these are cited in the main report text (included in the word count). When referencing, please use APA style 7th edition referencing style.
