Application Development and Programming Languages
Programming languages have evolved since the First Generation Languages (1GLs) in the 1940s. The 1GLs were machine languages, which interacted directly with hardware. 2GLs were assembly languages. FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC, PL/1, Pascal, and C were 3GLs. 4GLs include Visual Basic and Structured Query Language (SQL). Artificial Intelligence applications used 5GLs, which include Lisp and Prolog.
Java, C++, C#, Visual Basic, and .NET are object-oriented languages that were preceded by Smalltalk created in the 1970s. Scripting languages like JavaScript, PHP, Perl, VBScript, and others have become popular for developing Web applications and writing system administration scripts.
Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:
1. Compare and contrast object-oriented languages (Java, C++, C#, etc.) to imperative languages (C, Pascal, etc.) in terms of:
1. Programmability
2. Maintainability
3. Performance
4. Development tools
2. Explain the use of scripting languages, such as JavaScript, PHP, ASP, or JSP, for developing Web applications and Websites.
3. Select the scripting language that you would use to build highly interactive business Web applications. Support your selection.
4. Business applications development used to require separate code editors, debuggers, performance profilers, source code repositories, and testing tools from different vendors. Most business applications development today is done using integrated tools.
- Examine the evolution and importance of integrated development environments like Eclipse, and Microsoft Visual Studio and their integration with application maintenance repositories.
- Explain which integrated development environment you would prefer and why.
5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
- Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
- Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the professor's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
- Demonstrate the importance of application maintenance for an organization.
- Differentiate among the various generations and types of programming languages.
- Explain the types and role of distributed software architecture.
- Use technology and information resources to research issues in computer architecture.
- Write clearly and concisely about computer architecture using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.
