Ethnographic interview with older adults, aged 70+
This is a list of some potential guiding questions that you could use during the interview.
However, I would suggest not to stick to this list but add additional topics of your own interests.
Age
How old is the person? How old do they feel? Do they consider themselves old? At one age did they first consider themselves old? What event or change, if any, was responsible? When,
more generally, do they think someone is old!
• Health
How do they rate their health (excellent, good, fair, poor)? Why this choice? What medical conditions do they have? What sorts of limits do they impose? How have they adapted to having chronic conditions? How do they take care of their health now?
• Memory
daily activities?
How do they rate their memory (excellent, good, fair, poor)? What's changed? Any effect on
Physical function
Any limitations in mobility? Household activity? Generally, what's gotten harder to do? Do they do things differently because of physical limitation?
• Psychosocial function
What do they enjoy now? Change from when they were younger? Do they have as many friends as they would like? Do they feellonely? More or less religious now compared to when they were young?
Social support systems/networks
Do they have meaningful connections with their family and/or community? If so, do they feel supported by them? Are they getting support from their family and/or friends? Are they feeling isolated?
Parting thought
What's good or bad about being old? Do they think they have aged well? How do they cope with their aging? What are their strengths?
