ANTY 101 - Anthropology and the Human Experience Assignment - Field Reflection Paper, Montana State University, USA
The goal of this paper is to synthesize what you have learned about all four subfields throughout the semester. This paper is a proposal for a 4-field project that you could imagine conducting. You do not have to conduct the project. The point of the proposal is to demonstrate your understanding of how anthropologists integrate subfields to ask questions, collect and evaluate evidence, and draw conclusions.
Instructions -
Step 1: Think up a research question that relates to course material in some way. You could use your speech community from your language and perception exercise as a starting point. Alternately, think about anything in the course that interested you. We brainstormed topics for this project in class, so you should have some ideas under way.
Step 2: What evidence from each of the four subfields would you need to gather to answer your research question?
Step 3: How would you go about collecting this evidence? E.g. semi-structured interviews, mapping an archaeological site, measuring taphonomy, etc.
Step 4: Imagine that you have gathered this evidence and analyzed it. What could you learn from this to answer your research question?
Template: Here is an example template for your paper. This is just a template to assist you with organization. You do not have to follow this template.
Introductory paragraph: State your research question. How did you come up with this question and why is it important?
Paragraph 2: Describe your research community and site.
Paragraph 3: Describe what socio-cultural evidence you would need to answer your question and how you would gather this evidence.
Paragraph 4: Describe what linguistic evidence you would need to answer your question and how you would gather this evidence.
Paragraph 5: Describe what archaeological evidence you would need to answer your question and how you would gather this evidence.
Paragraph 6: Describe what physical anthropological evidence you would need to answer your question and how you would gather this evidence.
Paragraph 7: Imagine that you have collected and analyzed all of the above evidence. Explain your results.
Concluding paragraph: How does your evidence answer your research question? What is the answer?
