Antibiotics disks: ampicillin, penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and streptomycin

You have just determined whether the bacterial cultures are sensitive to the 5 antibiotics by observing the presence or absence of a zone of inhibition. You have given thought to whether these antibiotics exhibited a killing effect or simply a growth inhibition effect. Can you determine from these results alone if a particular antibiotic is bacteriostatic or bactericidal? If not, how can this be tested?

Using a sterile cotton swab, moistened with sterile broth, you will swab the surface of the agar within the zone of inhibition and use it to inoculate an agar plate. The plate will be incubated overnight (16 - 24hrs) and then stored at 4°C until next lab. Think about what you would expect to see if the antibiotic was indeed bactericidal versus bacteriostatic.
