Michelle works as a receptionist for a large law firm and recently received her annual performance appraisal. The appraisal was extremely thorough in areas in which Michelle needs to improve. In essence, the appraisal stated that since Michelle didn't perform up to standards within her position, she will not receive a raise this year. It also stated that if Michelle improves within the next sixty days, another appraisal will be given and, if she meets/exceeds expectations at that point, she will be given a raise. Michelle experienced both punishment and possible reward in this experience. Michelle is more apt to produce long-lasting improvements on her performance through rewards rather than punishment. However, she is fearful of losing her job. What ethical dilemmas are expressed in this scenario?
