Can be on any topic within colonial times through 1877
Topic:
His 101 - A U.S. History topic pre-Reconstruction (1877)
Sources: 6 - (1 can be the text, 1 can be my lectures, 2 must be physical sources -other than the class text- such as books, journal articles, etc.)
Part 1 - Submit a topic and thesis
The student will submit a one paragraph (3-5 sentences) explanation of their topic and proposed thesis statement. The topic must answer a question and/or argue an interpretation. THE TOPIC MUST BE ON THE SUBJECT AND WITHIN THE TIME FRAME REQUIRED FOR THE CLASS. The topic must be approved by the instructor.
Some examples:
Significance of a certain individual or event.
Comparing and contrasting different point of view about a person or event.
Analyzing a historical trend (i.e. the development of democracy, or a religious movement)
What is a thesis?
A thesis is a statement of purpose that gives the reader an idea of the point of the paper, article or book (in your case paper.) For beginning students a thesis can be as short as a sentence and at most a paragraph (3-5 sentences.) Experienced authors usually state the thesis and then expound on it before getting into the body of the work.
Guidelines:
1. Pick a topic that you will be interested in. Pick a topic WITHIN THE SUBJECT AND TIME PERIOD OF THE CLASS. That will help the motivation to work on the paper.
2. Take the time to "see what is out there" by looking online and/or visiting the library to see if there is a good amount for you to study. If you are interested in doing primary document research (which this instructor would smile upon greatly) see if the primary documents are available to you with little to no travel or cost.
3. Pick a topic that you will be able to be balanced and reasonable about. If the topic is too personal or you are too emotionally vested it may and/or will cloud your objectivity. Part of the final grade will be determined by your ability to be balanced and objective.
4. You will submit the paragraph proposal on Canvas in the module section. The paragraph should include: the thesis statement, what you are arguing, what your basic point of view is or will be.
Part 2 - submit sources for approval / guidance
The student will submit a list of sources they will use and a short (1-2 sentences) explanation for each source about how they are planning on using the source.
For example you might say:
1 - Give me Liberty textbook, vol 1, 4th ed.
I am using this source for basic information on my topic or I am using this source as one point of view 2- "such and such book" by Such and Such
I am using this source to contrast the different interpretations about my topic between this author and Dr. Eric Foner, author of the Give me Liberty text
3- Las Vegas Review Journal
I am using this source as a primary document to help support my topic thesis Guidelines:
1. Source list will need to be either MLA or APA style. You can consult the following link if you do not know how to cite sources in an academic research paper:
2. Sources need to be academic in nature. Avoid Wikipedia, Yahoo answers, blogs or source that allow
users to share their "knowledge" without verification or confirmation.
Part 3 - Submit a rough draft
The student will submit a rough draft version of their paper. Guidelines:
1. The minimum requirement for the rough draft is 2.5 pages. The uncompleted portion should be in an outline detailing where the paper is heading and the conclusion.
