Section 1: Project Plan
In this section, you plan using a Gantt chart to show how you will go about completing this class project with timelines attached.
Search online for some FREE trial software for Gantt chart or use the Gantt chart feature in
MS Project (if you have access to the software)
Section 2: Business Requirement Definition
You will need to define the business requirement for a Human Resources Information System. The key is to focus on a problem that consistently arises where you work or have worked in the past. If you do not have a problem to draw upon from your experiences, you may research a problem or interview someone in an organization. Think about your other HR courses and try to think of a problem an organization may encounter and how an HRIS could remedy it.
For instance, perhaps time and attendance issues arise each payroll. Thus, your business requirements definition will revolve around solving this issue. An example of the Business Requirements Definition (BRD) opening statement for this problem is; "There are too many errors in accounting for and paying people." As another example, if it takes too long to review resumes, you could use the following start to the problem definition; "It takes too long to review resumes."2 I would recommend only focusing on one problem for this assignment just to keep things less complicated. In the section, please also provide some information on the company (size, industry, location etc.)
Section 3: Project Justification
Once you feel comfortable with your business requirement definition, you can move to justifying your initiative. How much is this issue costing your company? For example, if a new cheque must be issued when there is a mistake in payroll, you can cost this out. This will help you in justifying the cost of a new system. Think back to the ROI exercise we did in class and on the exam.
The required deliverable for this section of the assignment is a clear costing breakdown within an excel spreadsheet so that you have foundation to justify the investment for HRIS system solution that the executives in the organization can understand and ultimately approve. Show me in hard numbers why the system is an investment, not just a cost in the long-term.
Section 4: Needs Analysis
You will then proceed to analyze your business process of what currently happening - i.e. what is the current method used to pay someone? What would be a better way? You will want to show what is currently happening and then what would be a better way to do things. This analysis will form the basis of your design of your new system. Use a flow chart to show the current and revised (i.e., before and after) business procedures for a graphic representation of the current and planned processes
