This assignment has two research parts to it:

1. Engage in independent research (library, online) on Julius Shulman and his work.

2. Re-view the film Visual Acoustics by Erick Bricker DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DO: You will first engage in research (Library, online) investigating everything you can identify about a certain portion of Shuman's body of work.

Each student will be assigned one architect/client of Shulman's to research. You will the re-view the film Visual Acoustics and find a link in the film with your research.

This link need not be literal. You may be researching Neutra but found a connection to Wright through the film's narrative, for example.

You will then produce a 300-word expository essay illustrated with sample photographs/images related to your readings and observations. Please include a minimum of three illustrations with this essay. Avoid obvious biographic data (date of birth, etc. etc.). DO NOT COPY/PASTE TEXT: Be original!

Explain in your own words the various possible associations of ideas/inspiration/influences between photographer and his subject. Speculate on how Shulman discovered hidden truths through his use of the frame and his mastery of light.

THE RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT: Questions to address in your research (and essay):

1. Read about the architect's formation, education, training and his/her body of work. Find an association between the architect, the architecture and the images that Shulman derived from them.

2. What was the working relationship between photographer and architect? What did each see?

3. What were the specific intentions and ideas that you observe in Shulman's use of the camera relative to what you read/learned about the architect and/or that particular project being photographed? List of Shulman clients/projects:

You will be assigned one of these:
