Previous Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro continuously brought into doubt the validity of the Brazilian election system during his term.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the 2022 Brazilian general election.
On 8 January 2023, supporters of the last president, Jair Bolsonaro, invaded the Brazilian congress.
These events could be analyzed with the sociological theory of Structural Functionalism. Under the greater structure of the Brazilian election, there exists several groups. These groups include (but are not limited to) Lula's political party, Bolsonaro's political party, Lula's supporters, and Bolsonaro's supporters. These groups mostly followed established norms (they participated in the election, and accepted the outcome.) Among Bolsonaro's supporters, there exists a radicalized sub-group that believed the election was compromised. Due to this, they refused to follow the established norms, and created disorder.
