Assignment:
This is in regards of the film "My Man Godfrey" (1936) G
Consider the historic elements and limitations of the film based on the numerous cultural considerations as you evaluate the themes. These all become very rich potential areas of ethical analysis. Each question, has a chapter (from author Craig Johnson) "Meeting the ethical challenges of leadership: Casting light or shadow" to reference regarding specific concepts/themes to identify in the film narrative.
For your media evaluation response, you will prepare responses to the following questions and provide support with specific examples seen in the film and concepts/themes from the course textbook and/or ethical leadership. Responses should be thorough, addressing all parts of the question completely.
1. In terms of Godfrey's various examples of leadership, which type of ethics officer would you say he demonstrated in different circumstances (ethical, unethical, neutral) and give examples? Of the five primary ethical climate types (Chapter 10), which one/s would you say best exemplified the culture/environment of either the household, the society, or any of the social classes showed in the film? Explain using any other additional concepts from any other chapter readings that make sense to you to justify your explanation.
2. Again, in further examining the ethical climate of the film, focusing on the good or bad leadership of any character, identify any aspects to illustrate/evaluate the ethical climate that were present to explain strengths/weaknesses. In addition, discuss any climate building tools that s/he could have used to enhance this ethical climate/environment. Apply/discuss any other chapter's ethical leadership theories/concepts to justify your explanation.
3. Analyze the society at that time in history and the evidence of social class/culture. Consider some of what Godfrey discusses as his family "backstory" and address/discuss the various "Global Shadows" you see evident in terms of potential ethical abuse areas. Be specific in your responses and try to use more than one shadow. Explain using concepts from The Dark Side of Globalization in the class readings to justify your response. Any other chapter concepts that you feel help define/explore your response may be used if applicable.
4. How might Integrated Social Contracts Theory be applied to any situation/character's leadership in this film, in order to make wise ethical choices in culturally diverse settings? Give both a macrosocial and microsocial example from the film.
5. Explain the stages of a crisis by describing an example in the film according to its stages. For example: Explain how Godfrey handled any crisis according to components of ethical crisis management (either effectively or ineffectively) and what components/suggestions could have been handled more effectively (if appropriate). Are there other leadership concepts from additional chapters that might have helped as well? Defend your response using concepts related to Ethical Crisis Leadership or any other chapters you might choose concepts from.
