Social culture is an environment of human-created beliefs, customs, knowledge, and practices (Newstroom, 2015). As I go to work I think more of these behaviors, terms and I believed that my workplace is dysfunctional if someone was coming from the outside, but the inside is functional because we all know each other, and we make decisions based on how we are feeling at the moment, and ignore all the information and facts. Our shop is supposed to open at 10 am, that is what it says and that is what people have known. However, some days, we often forget we have to come in and open the shop, so sometimes we come in at 12-1 pm, or we don't open at all because it is just "us". The people in our town know that is how we have been doing our business, however, people who come from different states find that a surprise, and do not look at it as a real difference. Inside our work environment, we come from the same place and have the same mindset.
An unfortunate situation happened where we hired an experienced manager who is originally from California. She has the correct work ethic, I would say. Work ethic for many people is they view work as very important, morally correct, and a desirable goal in life (Newstroom, 2015). She would come in and basically to us back then-boss us around. She started opening 30 minutes before work to set up, she made sure everything was clean and sanitized, and she made customer surveys a must. We all thought she did not fit in our system because she was different. I realized she was also using evidence-based management. According to the article, " What is Evidence-Based Management", evidence-based practices seek to address the state of affairs by helping managers critically evaluate the validity, generalizability, and applicability of the evidence they have in hand and find out the best available evidence. She looked at reports of when we were closing and looked at sales, and she used that to try and make a difference which we should have let her do. However, because we felt like she did not fit in our culture, we felt like she was trying to take it away from us, but she was trying to make it better. If we complied and were not so stubborn, she would have taken our business far.
