How to Create a Scatterplot and Insert the Line of Best Fit in Google Sheets

1. Go to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/.
2. Click "Start a new blank spreadsheet."
3. Enter your data in column A and column B, including column headers, to create a scatterplot with each axis labeled.
4. Highlight the information in Column A and Column B (by clicking and dragging your cursor over it). With the information highlighted, select "Insert" → "Chart."
5. On the "Chart types" tab, scroll down, click "Scatter" then "Insert." A scatterplot graph of your data appears.
6. Click on any point in the scatterplot to bring up the trend line menu.
7. Click on the diagonal line and select linear. This will insert the line of best fit.
8. Click on the line of best fit that was added to the graph and select R².
9. The value for R² will be calculated and inserted to the right of your scatterplot.
10. Name your spreadsheet. To save it for submission, select "File" → "Download as" → and choose "PDF" or "Microsoft Excel."

Fred and Carrie have surveyed Portland residents regarding their laundry habits and desired services and would like you to run the numbers for them. Review the information they have collected, contained in the resource titled "Portland Laundry Statistical Data."

Then, compile a two-to-three page report with the following components:

1. Analysis of Data
Analyze the raw data that they have collected. Using Google Sheets, create two scatter plots:
A. one comparing the number of pounds of laundry a household does per week with the likelihood that they would use the service.
B. another comparing a customer's distance from Drip & Dry with the likelihood of them using the service.

find the line of best fit, also known as a trend line, which approximates the data on the scatterplot and the R-squared values to help explain how close the data is to the trend line. Explain whether or not there are meaningful correlations within the variables for each scatterplot (pounds of laundry vs. likelihood to use the service and distance vs. likelihood to use the service.)

2. Two-Way Table
Using the survey data, create a two-way frequency table in a document in which you:
A. divide customers into discrete categories based on pounds per week-for example, 1-10 lbs., 11-20 lbs., 21-30 lbs., etc.
B. show how many customers requested each different possible service option.
C. represent these data as both raw numbers and the percent of the whole table, and include totals for each row and column.
D. In two to three sentences, explain what information is shown in the two-way table and what can be inferred from it.

3. Explanation: Is the Survey Information Sufficient?
determine the following:
A. If Fred and Carrie surveyed enough people to draw meaningful conclusions
B. How many people should be surveyed in a future study
C. What conclusions can reasonably be drawn from this information
D. What these results mean for this new business venture
