Problem: Some advocates of native anthropology argue that people who grew up with a particular community can have a more profound understanding of that community's culture, while others believe you need an outside perspective to recognize cultural difference. Still others say this division between native and non-native anthropologists is a false one, and what really matters is the quality of relationships the anthropologist is able to build. Compare and contrast the positioning of three of the anthropologists we have read so far: (i) Abu-Lughod (who calls herself a "halfie" because she feels she is partially native (ii) Sheriff (a total outsider to Brazil and the racial group she focuses on); and (iii) Yu, a Korean woman who was often mistaken to be one of the Chinese sex workers she was studying. Analyze the quality of relationships each was able to build. Did their position of being more or less native seem to have an effect? Why or why not?
