(1) For the first critical part: Select and analyze the original scene from one of the two novels (indicate the scene of your choice by providing the page number and briefly summarizing the scene). Can you identify and evaluate some significant narrative devices used in the original scene? What are the effects of these devices and how do they influence your understanding of the scene?
(2) For the creative part, you have two choices:
(a) re-write the original scene in some significant ways by making changes to the narrative devices used in the original scene (for example, you can use 1st person narrator rather than 3rd person narrator or you can change focalization, tense, or anything else); or
(b) find some significant gaps or misconstructions in the narrative and fill these gaps/rectify these misconstructions by using narrative devices of your choice.
(3) For the second critical part, analyze the choices you've made in your revision and discuss the effects you're trying to achieve, and the significance of those effects for the experience of the narrative. Basically, why did you want to create these changes? How do these changes alter the narrative? Why do you think these changes work better?
