Question 1: Students should choose a facility from the following list and then develop a list of constituents (customers, internal and external constituents) for that facility: college football stadium, amateur ice hockey arena, private health club, local parks department, bowling alley, or nonprofit facility such as a JCC or YMCA. The students should then present their list to the instructor through a written report indicating exactly why each constituent is important.
Question 2: After listing the constituents of their facilities, students can improve their understanding of the management process by developing a mission statement, three to five goals (strategic and tactical, and both short term and long term), three to five objectives, and at least 5 tactics for the facility they have chosen. Remember that tactics are the elements that help a facility (through its employees) achieve its objectives. Through developing the mission statement, goals, objectives, and tactics, students will develop a comprehensive plan for helping to operate the facility.
Question 3: Students then develop an organizational structure that will be most effective for their facilities. Develop an organizational chart and then critically examine it to determine whether there are too many or too few levels in the organization. Analyze the lines of authority and how much span of control a manager has as well as consider what can happen if too many employees report to the same manager.
