Questions: To analyze is to discover or reveal something through detailed examination. Your interpretation is what the thing means to you, according to your analysis.
A poor analysis:
• Only describes who, what, when, and where, without clarifying their significance
• Doesn't answer "so what?" or "who cares?"
• Contains little or no evidence to support itself
In the first paragraph, focus only on your observations about the image. What do you notice? Describe the illustration as if you were talking to someone who hasn't seen it before.
In the second paragraph, analyze the illustration based on your observations, citing specific evidence from the image. In other words, argue what the image means and how it means it.
Type your assignment with your name, my name, class and assignment, and due date at the top. Step away from your paper. With fresh eyes, come back to make revisions. Step away when you're done, then come back to proofread it out loud. Submit it once you're ready. If you need help, ask.
An effective analysis:
• Focuses on the hows and whys of the subject: how it means it, and why it matters
• Answers "so what?" and "who cares?" and emphasizes these points
• Is supported by evidence and the interpretation of that evidence
