There are many pros and cons to immunizing your child of which I definitely agree with the former. Not only do these vaccines protect your child from diseases, but also help to prevent the spread of these diseases to others. "Some diseases that once injured or killed thousands of children, have been eliminated completely and others are close to extinction- primarily due to safe and effective vaccines" (vaccines.gov, 2018). An example of this is polio which was one of the most-dreaded diseases as it caused paralysis and death across the United States. Since the introduction of the polio vaccine, there haven't been any reports of polio in the United States. Another example of this is smallpox which was eliminated all around the world in part because of the vaccine. Even though many of the diseases we get vaccinated for such as Measles, Mumps, and Rubella aren't as common, it is still very important to have your children vaccinated. "If vaccines were not given, the bacteria and viruses that cause these diseases could begin to infect more and more children again" (American Acacdemy of Pediatrics, 2013). An example given in the article titled Why Immunize Your Child explains how cases of Haemophilus influenza type b or Hib Disease, which is a serious disease that usually affects children under 5 years old, have decreased from 20,000 a year to 100 a year in the United States since the 1980s. The bacteria that causes Hib still exists in the United States. There are also other disease outbreaks around the world which is why it's so important to vaccinate your child.
Along with the heath risks of not vaccinating your child, there are also financial and social risks involved with not vaccinating. Some schools and facilities will deny unvaccinated children admittance if they aren't up-to-date on all their vaccines. "Some vaccine-preventable diseases can result in prolonged disabilities and can take a financial toll because of lost time at work, medical bills or long-term disability care". Vaccines are usually covered by your insurance and there are even programs out there that will offer vaccines for free to low-income families.
I thought it fair to name a few cons to vaccinating as well although I feel they do not stand up to the pros of vaccinating. There are some cons to vaccinating your children. One of these cons is the side effects a child could have after receiving a vaccination, which may include soreness at the site of the injection, fever, swelling, and tenderness. Even though serious side effects are very rare, children may experience a seizure from the fever caused by the vaccine, but this is very rare, and it is reported they do not cause any harm. "There is an extremely rare possibility, less than one in a million, of a life-threatening allergic reaction after getting a vaccine" (HealthlinkBC Staff, 2016) but your health are provider would be prepared in case this were to occur. Vaccinations are also said to only be 95% effective so there is a 5% chance of becoming infected.
