Description : Analyzing an Historical Debate
The debate among historians over how and why white Americans created a system of slave labor in the seventeenth century—and how and why they determined that people of African descent and no others should populate that system—has been a long and unusually heated
one. At its center is the question of whether slavery was a result of white racism or helped to create it.
The two works that were central to this debate which has become to be known as the Handlin-Degler debate, are "Origins of the Southern Labor System,"and "Slavery and the Genesis of American Race Prejudice," In this assignment you will read each of these documents and analyze the position held by each author and state which position you believe is correct and make an argument as to why.
Part I. Introduction
