Book Analysis
Below are the instructions for the book review/analysis portion of your grade. You are allowed the use of your notes, the readings, discussions, module videos, and your peers. However, all of your answers should be YOUR original work.
What You will Do
For this assignment, you should have completed the fictional book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Warning: Do not attempt to substitute the movie for the reading! If you do, your work will reflect a shallow understanding of the content. Your goal is to provide a detailed, in-depth analysis.
This assignment requires you to analyze the content of The Hunger Games using social theoretical concepts learned in this course. Your task is to map three of the theories learned in class onto the plot of the fictional book. You should have read and thoroughly understood the three theories you select for application. For this essay, you may not use any of the same theories used during your examinations. Using the same theorist is acceptable.
Paper Requirements
You must provide specific examples from both the fictional book's plot and your theory readings as evidence of your claims. You may use any of the readings on the syllabus (from your book or Canvas). Quotations taken directly from the texts are required. Quotes must be relevant to your argument. You must use at least one quote per theoretical explanation and one quote per example from The Hunger Games. That means you should have a minimum of six quotes in your paper. You may use more than six quotes. Make sure you cite these quotes correctly (use quotation marks and reference the author and a page number) to avoid plagiarism. You should also paraphrase and apply the theories as much as possible in order to strengthen your argument (and convince me of your knowledge). Your answers should express breadth and include a variety of theories/theorists.
When describing the sociological theories you will want to "map" the theory onto the plot of the fictional story. This will require you to describe a particular part of the plot in detail while showing the connection of the example to the theory you have described. You must describe at least three different sections of the plot/book. I am testing your ability to apply theory to pop culture and the world of fiction. You'd be surprised how much of the fictional world is actually quite theoretical!
