Assignment:
The research project includes two phases in total.
Phase-I
Each group of students is required to select an industry in Canada (e.g. Automobile, Hospitality, Construction, Telecom, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Mining, Petroleum, Electronics, and Computers etc.) and do the following:
a) Define the industry in relation with its environmental complexity.
b) Identify the industry leaders with (2-3 organizations) (keeping in view their revenues and/or market size).
C) Explore the most common corporate/business strategies used in the selected industry with the probable reasons/challenges.
D) Analyze the business trends in the industry.
E) Analyze the major current and future skills and competencies of the current workforce.
F) Analyze the demand for and supply of labor characteristics (specialized jobs etc.) in next 5-10 years in the selected industry.
Phase II In the second phase, the group will choose a company from the selected industry. Keeping in view the business strategies, the group is required to explore company's HR practices/challenges through the available literature for the following requirements i.e.
1) Analyze the strategic contexts of the selected company i.e. missions, vision, objective, core competencies and culture.
2) Explore and review the current HR planning practices/techniques (if any) use by the selected organization.
3) design an internal organizational audit of the selected company evaluating its strengths and weaknesses.
4) Discuss what basic tools and techniques are used by the selected company for human resources forecasting (if you don't find any, you can propose some with the possible reasons)
5) Explore their succession management plan (if any). If you don't find any, suggest why they should have one.
6) Evaluate the effectiveness of their use of technology for HR Planning.
The group will then compare their identified HR planning practices/challenges of the company with the industry's best practices. The identified gap will enable the group to come up with the a few recommendations/measures regarding HR planning for the selected organization for next 5-10 years.
