Project 1

Topic: US Expansion, Domestic and Global Tensions, 1880-1915

For this part of the Personalizing History Project, we will look at your hometowns, as an opportunity to see how the growth and expansion of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was reflected in the expansion and development of the town or neighborhood where you came from or currently reside. Please use the SUNY Empire Online Library to gather information about your community. You also might want to gather materials via any local historical society or by visiting your public library.

Please create a post about Kearny New Jersey and then follow the next questions:

  • Lists the year in which your community was founded, and any names of key founders.
  • Describes key industries, notable figures, or aspects of the community that you find interesting.
  • Discusses 1-3 key events that might have occurred in your community in the years 1880-1915 and their relationship with the broader outline of American history during this period.

Project 2

Topic 1877 - 1915 Timeline

Throughout this course we will be using this Timeline to re-think U.S. history and to compile information to help support your journey through the content and learning activities within the course. The overall goal of this activity is to create a collective U.S. History from 1865 Timeline that is based on the topics, issues, events, and people that interest you.

For this module, please complete the following activities:

Documenting the Era of Expansion and Imperialism

  • Read through chapters 2-7 of the United States History II online textbook and chapters 16-20 of The American Yawp collective history text, making notes of events and individuals in these chapters that particularly interest you.
  • As you complete the readings, please add at least one key event or individual to the Historic Timeline.
  • Title beginning with the date(s) when the event occurred (Year - Month -Day) and including a short description about the person or event
