Option A: For this project, you are to use Online searches to virtually explore or in-person visits to two sites of death. The purpose of these "visits" is to gain a visceral insight into the lived experience of body enshrinement, mourning, disposal, and interment of the deceased. Your primary goal is to observe and think holistically about what this sacred space tells you about life and death - think about variations in lifestyles, stages (age), class, gender, belief, values, health, architecture, space used, generations, culture, and religions. What similarities and differences do you see? For example: try to find catacombs, charnel houses, burial pits (plague), cemeteries, chapels, public memorials, gravesites, family burial plots, mausoleums, etc... Also look for sections at the cemetery (i.e. observe segmentation, separation, segregation, etc...). Some cemeteries also provide mortuary services, and you can email them about all that entails. Please download images or screenshots of your two sites - documenting your experiences, and recording your thoughts and feelings. If you go in person to someplace local, please take pictures but avoid taking pictures of mourners.
Analysis Process for the paper instructions:
Introduce the two chosen sites and elucidate a thesis from your observations. How do the sites speak to each other? How can they be spoken of together to inform how we think about and confront death?
Analyze the possible meaning surrounding your two sites based on what you read in our class readings, articles, etc... by using at least 3 citations from our course readings or other readings you have found to analyze the sites and possible implications for society. No encyclopedias, please.
MLA, APA, Chicago, or simple in-text citation style, please.
Compare/contrast the two sites. Why you did specifically choose these two sites? Is there a drastic difference between them? Are one public and one private? How are kept? Who is buried, who is remembered, and who is left to history? What does our way of remembrance/commemoration/mourning say about our society/people?
Embed or attach your images. This will allow me to see what led you to your inferences
Standard 12-point font, double space, one-inch margins.
Images don't count towards page count.
Option B: Provide a minimum 6-page paper analyzing a film or series (from anywhere in the world) related to our theme of death, dying, or the afterlife. Some past choices that are examples, not required, and are only a few of the multitude of choices you might make: Coco, The Farewell, Soul, The Good Place, Ghost, Steel Magnolias, The Lovely Bones, The Bucket List, ... you are only limited by your imagination.
Please use three sources. No encyclopedias - no Wikipedia for sure.
Cite using MLA, APA, or Chicago format or simple in-text.
Standard 12-point font, double space, one-inch margins.
