Assignment

Aim of the Assignment:

Your assignment is to Part A) analyse phonological data collected from a young child (“George”) who has undergone a speech assessment and Part B) present the case, findings, and implications in a comprehensive case report.

In the phonological analysis (Part A; no word limit), you will provide a:

1) Independent analysis (inventory, positional, and sequence constraints)

2) Relational analysis (phonological processes)

In the case report (part B; 1500 words), you will

1) summarise the key information in the case history, pointing out potential red flags;

2) summarise the results from your phonological analysis of the child’s speech, highlighting the potential reasons for the boy’s unintelligibility;

3) Identify two features in the child's case history that could be relevant to their difficulties. Conduct a search in the scientific literature and arrive at a balanced conclusion about the impact that the issue in their case history likely has had on the child's speech/language development.

NB: You are not qualified and therefore not required to provide a diagnosis, treatment targets, or an intervention approach.

Relation to Learning Outcomes:

Conducting the phonological analysis (part A) and writing the case report (part B) will contribute to the following learning outcomes:

1) Apply an advanced understanding of how typically developing children (0-5) develop speech, language, and communication

2) Communicate a basic understanding of ways that speech, language, and communication development can be atypical

3) Analyse the impact that (atypical) speech, language, and communication development has on the children's family and on their own ability to participate in society

4) Analyse, interpret, and report on speech, language, and communication samples.
