Now read "Letter from Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King, Jr. Identify the context for the letter King writes based on the persons addressed and his references to past events. What events have created the occasion for which King has been inspired to compose such a lengthy letter? To whom is the letter addressed? Can you infer anything about the identity of the recipients of the letter

Analyze King's letter as a persuasive argument. What modes of appeal does King make use of for his cause (e.g., logic, emotion, credibility)? Give concrete examples from the text to illustrate King's methods. Does he present rebuttals to the opposition? Again, provide examples to illustrate his tactics. How would you describe the tone of the letter? Why might King have adopted this kind of tone for a letter to this particular audience? Is his argument ultimately convincing? Why or why not? What elements did you find particularly persuasive? Why?

What parallels can you draw between Gandhi's principles of nonviolence and the philosophy of nonviolent protest outlined in King's letter?
