Like Elizabethan England during the time of Shakespeare (late 1500's), the setting of Romeo and Juliet in Verona is patriarchal, which meant that men were the undisputed leaders. Women were seen as "the weaker sex", matched for economic reasons, and their main roles were mother and homemaker (except for the wealthy). Juliet, heir to the Capulet fortune, in many ways does not follow the norms of the day for Renaissance women; as a result, some see her, and other Shakespeare female protagonists, as pioneers for the feminist movement. To begin, brainstorm the ways that Juliet breaks the social norms for women in her day: attitudes, actions, behaviors, words.
