Discussion 1

The populations of choice to work with would be substance abuse with mental health disorder. Social workers play a huge role with this type of population, helping them battle off their substance abuse disorder and mental health struggles. The Social workers job consists of many factors as mentioned in the book "we as social workers have wide range of professional roles" and we have to keep this in mind as it is important factor (p.34), when we are in practice of helping our client if different settings. In the population, I am focusing on I would apply Planned Change Steps in GIM addressing the 7 steps (p.43) when working with the client and trying to assess.

Substance abuse with mental health disorder is influenced by a variety of psychological and ecological factors. As social worker the ecological or systems theory is used to provide a structural and system component to analyze client's needs and identify the different variables at each level Micro, Mezzo, Exo, Macro and Chrono System that play or played a role of the disorders in the past, present and future to incorporate proper treatment.

Working in the prison system I can see firsthand substance abuse and mental health that is needed. I have gained insight through research resources, direct contact with population or connecting with other social worker and psychologist that are specialized in the population field that I am needing knowledge in. I am getting daily hands on training and am more excited about my journey to becoming a social worker.

Discussion 2

My population of interest is probationers and parolees. Upon being released they are expected to adapt to their new lives pretty quickly with minimal to no support, which in part will depend on the personality and training of the probation officer and/or parole officer assigned to the client. This particular population is given more rules to follow that pertain specifically to them with a disciplinarian watching over them for a specific amount of time depending on what the judge requested. They are also sometimes ordered by the judge to maintain monthly expenses without having consistent financial resources to care for themselves.

Identify one professional role that a social worker may assume when working with this population.
Explain how you might apply ecological or systems theory when working with the population.
Describe specific steps you will take to develop your knowledge of this population through critical thought and research.
