NOTE MORE DETAILS IN PARAGRAPHS (NO BULLET POINTS)

1. Natalie, a recently hired server, often finds herself the object of sexual banter on the part of the male servers. Annoyed, she complains to the manager of the restaurant. To appease her, he rearranges his employees' schedules in such a way that Natalie ends up with the most coveted shifts. Her coworkers are angered by the manager's action. Discuss how the manager might have handled things differently.

2. Stephan has worked on the front desk of a Grande Prairie hotel for two years. He married Tyler a couple of weeks ago, and their wedding reception was at the hotel. A few days after the wedding, a long-stay hotel guest, who regularly booked rooms for his oilfield services company, approached the desk and told Stephan that he wanted to settle his account and cancel all future room bookings for his company. When Stephan asked for a reason, the guest said it was because "you people, with your parades and your rainbows, make me sick." The guest became upset and visibly angry and said that if he ran into Stephan outside the hotel, he would "beat the crap" out of him. What steps should the hotel management take?

3. Samantha works as a bartender for a popular upscale-casual restaurant chain. After the lounge was renovated, the manager drafted a new dress code for the staff. Samantha noticed that the male bartenders were still required to wear the black shirt-black pants uniform that she used to wear, but all-female staff were subjected to dress standards that included a short black skirt, black fitted t-shirt and shoes with a minimum 3-inch heel. When Samantha complained that she would struggle to stock beer and carry cases of wine in the new attire, the manager said that she was welcome to become a cocktail server where she wouldn't have to make as much bend and lifting. Discuss.

4. John is an experienced line cook who took a job as a greeter at an Irish-style pub. Eager to get back into the kitchen, he asked to speak to the kitchen manager, who is from Ireland, when he heard that one of the cooks was quitting. At first, John was told by the kitchen manager that the position was filled. Then he was told that he was too valuable as a greeter and the business didn't want to "hide him in the kitchen." Finally, he learned that the kitchen manager had hired an Irish friend, whose only food preparation experience was two months at Subway. When John mentioned the situation to his co-worker, the pub bartender, the bartender said that the kitchen was always staffed by Irish. What discrepancies might a human rights commission investigation uncover? Discuss.
