QUESTION: Analyze Cindy's leadership in terms of the managerial based approach?
Tovey Company Cindy Covey is the wife of Ben Covey who tragically died of a heart attack while travelling home from work. Ben Covey owned an office supply business called Tovey Company. After his death Cindy decided not to sell the business even though it was on the brink of collapse because of decreased profits for a few years. Instead, she decided to run it herself. She had never been involved herself in the Tovey company while her husband was still alive and only knew the business through what her husband had shared with her.
Tovey Company was one of many office supply companies in the city. For the first six months, Cindy familiarized herself with the employees and the operation of the company. Next, she did a citywide analysis of companies and businesses that had a reason to purchase office supplies from Tovey Company. Based on her assessment of the company capabilities, Cindy had a vision that Tovey Company could be viable, healthy and competitive. She continuously sold her vision and short and long-term goals to employees. She brought hope to employees and made them believe and have confidence that the company could be profitable. Cindy's enthusiasm and optimism helped employees to believe in her leadership and management. She assured employees that no employee would lose his/her job even though the business was not doing well in the beginning. Over the next five years Cindy continually invested a lot of money in the business until it started to make a profit.
When the business became profitable, Cindy appointed supervisors for various units. With this she was able to decentralize decision-making of short-term decisions on some business activities which encouraged supervisors and employees to be creative. Employees felt that they were co-owners of the business. Employees and supervisors were never left in the lurch, Cindy supported them in the work they were doing through constant mentoring meetings. She also regularly sent them for workshops on areas where they needed development. Information received from employees revealed that they appreciated Cindy's leadership, they saw her as a very considerate and a fair person. Tovey company was built in a community of people who loved sports, as a result of that Cindy sponsored a local soccer team that mostly consisted of members of her staff.
