Case #031-1: Homicide investigation Case Scenario

Two bikers found a burned body wrapped up with a partially burned carpet (red) by the Ocala park in Orlando. K-9 unit was called at the scene to support the crime scene investigators with the sample collection.

The body was fully consumed by the fire. Dental records were used to identify the victim. Upon investigation, the husband of the victim become a suspect and a search warrant was issued to search his car and apartment. The suspect wants to recover $2 million life insurance from his wife.

Search warrant: Suspect claims that he was out of state when his wife was reported missing by her family members. Upon search of his apartment one container with apparent fuel residue was found by the dumpster and submitted to the laboratory. A handsaw was found with visible fiber residue (red) and submitted to the laboratory.

Evidence collection
You are responsible to guide the CSI investigators on what to collect from the "crime scene" and how to submit the items to the laboratory. Using the case scenario provided describe in detail your answer to the following questions.

1. What items should be collected as evidence.
2. What items should be collected as control.
3. Describe the evidence collection method, including documentation and packaging.
4. List specific analysis to be requested at the laboratory.
5. Would you recommend searching for any other type of evidence during the search warrant?

Case #031-2: Hit and run
Case Scenario
A dead body is found in a street intersection, the victim was hit by a vehicle. A witness reported to have seen a green vehicle hit the victim and drive away. A suspect car is found at a body shop with a damaged hood. A piece of the hood was submitted as item 1 (known sample, K1). Some small fragments of apparent paint were recovered from the clothing of the victim and submitted as item 2 (questioned sample, Q1).

The laboratory is asked to analyze and compare the recovered paint fragments (Q1) to the paint control obtained from the suspect vehicle (K1). The laboratory is also asked to determine if the paint fragments are OEM or refinished and if possible, to use PDQ database to determine details of the origin of the paint fragments recovered from the victim.

Case Scenario
In northern Florida, a woman was arrested and charged with the beating death of a young boy. The scene of the crime was a construction site. The soil in the area is mostly sand that had been transported to the area for construction purposes. As such, the sand had received additional mixing during the moving and construction process.

During a search warrant, gloves were recovered from the suspect's home that contained sand that was similar to that found at the scene and significantly different in composition and particle size from the area of the suspect's home.

The suspect claimed the soil on the gloves came from her garden.
