Assignment:
Scenario
You are a Registered Nurse working on the surgical unit. You are completing a pre-operative assessment on a 56 year old married woman/man, who is being admitted for a right hip replacement. The client has three children and works full time. During the interview for pre-operative assessment, the patient was not making eye contact. from her behaviors, it seems that she was not ready for the assessment as she was rude and interrupted a few time during the interview. Her tone and facial expression appears to be angry and frustration.
During the interview, the nurse voiced that she understood how the patient was feeling and that got the patient upset and she replied that nobody understands how she feeling. She dismissed the interview as she voiced that she needed to sleep and that she will be ready after an hour nap. As the nurse, she tried to hide her frustration. The nurse paused a few time during the interview especially when the patient yelled at her that no body understands how she feels. During the interview, the nurse was touching her face, didn't make so much eye contact as well as the patient. The nurse showed a bit of her frustration in rolling her eyes and as well in her tone and response.
1. Components of Scholarly Paper:
• Ensure the introductory paragraph briefly identifies the scenario or the 'clients' health concern/issue/question.
• Analyze Active Listening and Nonverbal Communication Skills
? Describe two forms of nonverbal communication the client demonstrated during the interview and your perception of each; did the perception influence the relational interaction? How did it influence the interaction? If it did not influence the interaction, why not?
? Describe two forms of active listening or nonverbal communication used by 'the nurse' during the interview and the purpose for using it at that time.
? Discuss challenges, if any, experienced while trying to maintain full attention and engagement in what the client was communicating.
2. Analyze Inquiry Skills
? Provide four examples of different interviewing skills demonstrated, different from those mentioned above.
? For each of the four examples:
? Provide the point in the clip where the interaction takes place and correctly identify the skill used (either identify the time in the video or describe the interaction)
? Describe why this technique was used at this point in the interview. If there has not been enough variety in the interviewing skills to provide four examples, students can write on what technique(s) they could have used in particular instances and why?
3. Skills Development and Self Reflection
? Provide two specific examples from the interview that were particularly effective moments. Why were these effective?
? Provide two specific examples from the interview that were ineffective moments. Why were these ineffective? Provide a suggested response that would be more effective and explain why it would be a more effective response.
? Discuss two significant improvements made over the course of the semester in personal relational inquiry abilities. Provide examples from class or practice where possible.
? Provide a realistic goal for future relational inquiry skills development. What needs to be improved upon and why? How can this goal be achieved?
