Describe the value of the social science lens for understanding technology.
In my last discussion, I talked about NASA's TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) and how it found a possible habitable exoplanet, TOI-700 d. This discovery is important because it shows how we're getting better at spotting exoplanets that might have life, expanding our knowledge of the universe and where we fit in it. TESS's job is to look for planets circling stars beyond our solar system, and finding TOI-700 d is a big step forward in finding planets similar to Earth.
My understanding has been greatly influenced by analyzing this topic from a social science perspective. Looking at technological advancements through this lens highlights the human aspects involved. It delves into how these discoveries impact society's worldview, cultural narratives, and philosophical questions about life beyond our planet. This approach allows us to better understand the wider implications of the TESS mission. It helps us appreciate how it sparks public interest in space exploration and science education, and how it shapes our collective imagination and aspirations.
The social science perspective offers unique perspectives by centering on the human experience and the context of society. It sheds light on how groundbreaking technological advancements, such as the finding of TOI-700 d, impact our sense of self, our dreams, and our position in the vast cosmos. By studying how society reacts to these discoveries, including the excitement and curiosity they generate, we gain a deeper understanding of how technology and human culture interact. This viewpoint allows us to recognize that technology not only enhances our scientific understanding but also enhances our cultural and existential stories, fostering a stronger bond with the universe and our pursuit of knowledge.
