Task:
Each team of up to 3 students will design and analyze a modular linear-rail hoist structure that spans 8 meters between existing supports and can lift 2.5kN.
Specifications:
The hoist must be capable of lifting a 2.5kN load and moving it horizontally (side-to-side) along a rail that is connected to the hoist structure. The total length of travel along the Mil is to be 7m. The rail cannot rest directly on the supports: it must be connected to the hoist structure. The rail must be made of multiple pieces that are aligned to each other. The rail(s) may only be connected to the hoist structure at the ends of the rail segments. The system must provide enough mechanical advantage in lifting the 2.5kN load that the person using it will only have to input a maximum of 600N. You must design the pulley/cable or chain/sprocket system required to achieve the mechanical advantage. All material for constructing the structure (excluding the rail) must fit in a 2m by 2m by 2m box (interior dimensions). Rail segments must not exceed 3.5m in length. The supports (provided) are 3m tall and the ceiling above the supports is 4m high. The lowest point of the entire structure (minus hanging chains, cables, ropes. and hook) must be at or above 2.5 meters above the floor. Use a factor of safety of 2.0 for all analysis and design decisions.
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
