Case: Students will develop a lesson plan that gives students a greater number of opportunities and a higher level of responsibility with communicating ideas into practice with students. You will demonstrate how you scaffold with students to show independence and ownership of the language and content of the lesson. In addition, for this plan you will implement language objectives to ensure our English learners have equal access to the curriculum even though they may not be fully proficient in the language. A lesson plan template will be provided as well as a series of questions to respond to.

Assignment

Task: Develop, conduct, and analyze a lesson plan that gives emergent bilingual students a greater number of opportunities and a higher level of responsibilities with communicating ideas into practice.

Demonstrate:

an understanding of how to modify lessons to ensure access to curriculum,

Utilize standards (CCSS and WIDA) to develop lesson activities and assessments

Choose and utilize appropriate instructional strategies for emergent bilingual students

Demonstrate an understanding of translanguaging and how to incorporate a student's first language into the lesson

Using your course experience thus far, you will create, implement and analyze one lesson plan

Steps

1. Design your lesson for high school English Language Learners (ELLs) (template provided below)

2. Implement this lesson in your own classroom or clinical context

3. You will provide a written analysis of the lesson plan.

a) Describe the student(s) and the choices you made as you designed your lesson (Which strategy did you use?, How did you ensure students had access to the academic content?, How did you use scaffolding when appropriate?, How did you use translanguaging?)

b) Provide an overall reflection of your lesson (Did they perform how you anticipated?, Did you have to adjust anything during the lesson?, Did it go as expected? If not, how so?, etc.)

c) Describe changes you would make for a future lesson plan and reasons for change

d) Analyze the assessment of the students (Were they able to reach the lesson objective?)
