Essay on Advertisement Analysis
Instruction:
For this writing assignment, you will analyze a broadcast advertisement by a current or former candidate for elective office. You are not limited to ads by presidential candidates. Ads are available on living room candidate, YouTube, democrats, gop, and on a variety of PAC websites.
You are to write an analysis using the criteria outlined below.
Content Requirements
Your analysis must include the following elements:
1. Begin your essay with a link to your campaign ad so students can watch the ad as well.
2. Provide political background for the ad. Briefly describe or explain the following:
o In which election year and in which race was the ad presented?
o Who were the contestants?
o What were the key campaign issues?
o What interest/issue/demographic groups provided the strongest support for each candidate?
3. Describe the content of the ad.
o What images/symbols are used?
o Does the candidate appear in the ad?
o Does the opponent appear in the ad?
4. Identify the message.
o What is the ad trying to say?
5. Identify the goal/strategy of the ad.
o Who is the intended audience? (women, older Americans, racial/ethnic minorities, Republicans/Democrats)
o What techniques are used to generate emotion (appeal to patriotism, loyalty, reason)?
o Is the ad positive or negative in tone?
6. Evaluate the ad's effectiveness.
o Has anything been said about the ad in newspapers, blogs, or elsewhere?
o What is your opinion of the ad?
o Does the ad achieve its goal?
Essay Formatting Requirements
• Essay Length: Your paper should be 3 - 5 double-spaced paragraphs with size 11-12 font, one inch margins, and saved to a Microsoft Word document.
• Sources: Great essay will use 2-3 sources, which might include other analyses of your specific ad or political ads in general. Newspapers often provide detailed commentary about campaign ads. It is fine for you to rely entirely on the video and textbook as your resources for the essay. However, you can search for other references that lend weight to your analysis. You may go to NOVA Library website to search for other references.
• Citations*: Please remember to cite your sources including where you found the them. MLA citation style is preferred. Whichever style you choose (MLA APA etc.), please be consistent. You should include a bibliography or works cited page at the end of your essay.
